26: Dangerous

Kyne ran as fast as he could. The book was clutched awkwardly in one hand as he ran with a dagger in the other. He was doing everything he possibly could to make sure he didn’t fall on the path as they sprinted away. He had no free hand to catch himself on the rocky path if he needed to find the ground quickly.

Eileen was almost giddy with laughter as she clutched her small wooden chest and followed him. He kept checking back over his shoulder to make sure she was still close by and that the pirates were not chasing after them. He was sure they’d be in pursuit any moment now.

After they had spent nearly all of their energy running, they reached a spot where Kyne felt like they would be sheltered enough to catch their breath. He pulled Eileen down into an alcove of rock and, while he was panting heavily, began berating her.

“I really... need you to give me... some type of warning before you throw... one of those things,” he said in between gasps of air. “If I didn’t see you reaching in your bag... I would have been just as blind as everyone else in that cave!”

He shoved the book under his arm as he wiped his face with his now free hand. He was drenched. Every part of him ached. He hadn’t pushed himself this hard since he had been nearly whipped to death, and his body hated him for it.

“You were brilliant!” Eileen said happily. “I can’t believe you got my book!”

She clutched her chest as if it were full of gold. She even rested her head on it dreamily.

Sweat poured down Kyne’s forehead as he attempted to make his breaths regular. He reached under his arm and pulled out the book he had seen Atler rifling through before he had gotten up and walked around their hideout.

It was lucky there was so much junk everywhere in the caves. And that the pirates were having some rather heated argument about who was going to deliver a message. Otherwise, they would definitely have been spotted sneaking around inside. Kyne was more than satisfied just knowing that they had the book and the ingredients that Eileen needed in the hideout. He was planning on telling her they should come back at night and steal it back when most of the pirates would be asleep.

That was when Atler came rifling through the exact spot they were hiding.

As soon as the pirate said he had found the chest, Eileen threw one of her vials. Kyne had grabbed a cloak, thrown it over Atler, and grabbed the book from the pirate’s grasp just as the cave began filling with dark smoke.

They had shoved more than one pirate away in their escape. Kyne was surprised they had made it out so cleanly. Only now, the pirates knew they were close by.

That was going to be dangerous for them.

“I’m not sure if it’s worth it yet,” Kyne said as he managed to get his breathing back to normal.
